Natural resources and environment and are the foundation of Malawi’s agro-based economy. However, these natural resources are facing increasing pressure due to the growing human population. In this regard, Salima District Council has prioritized natural resources as one of its priority areas in order to promote effective policy implementation on both renewable and non-renewable natural resources. These resources include forestry, water, heavy and light minerals, sun, wildlife, and others. Therefore, this directorate is mandated to perform among others the following functions:
- Coordinate implementation of environmental protection and management activities with other stakeholders
- Coordinate implementation of forest management and protection activities with other stakeholders
- Coordinate implementation of mining exploration and extraction activities
- Coordinate implementation of community water supply development and management activities
- Coordinate implementation of energy affairs activities with other stakeholders
