SALIMA DISTRICT EDUCATION PROFILE

The District Education System is managed primarily by the District Education Office which is managed by the District Education Manager (DEM). The DEM reports to the District Commissioner of the District Council on issues affecting education in their area of jurisdiction. The office has the following section: Advisory, Human Resource, planning and accounts. The district has 14 education zones with 166 primary schools. The zones are headed by Primary Education advisors. There are 26 secondary schools grouped into clusters three clusters Chipoka, Msalura and Matenje. In addition the district has 6 Complementary Basic Education centers (CBE) .

ADVISORY SECTION

The Advisory section provides advisory services to schools in order to support school leaders, managers, teachers and other stakeholders in improving the quality of education they provide. Advisory services focus on supporting schools so that they achieve positive outcomes for students: effective learning, achievement in line with their potential and a safe and happy experience of school life.

The district has 14 zones namely Chipoka, Ngodzi, Lifidzi, Katelera, Chitala, Chilumba, Mgwirizano, Kaphatenga , Msalura, Ngolowindo, Yambe, Thavite, Kanongola and Matenje.These zones are headed by Primary Education Advisors (PEAs).

Each zone has Teacher Development Center which is primary used for Continuous Professional Development trainings and other education gatherings.

MSALURA TEACHER DEVELOPMENT CENTER (TDC)
Chipoka Teacher Development Center with solar panels as source of energy . Solar panels were installed with funds from United Nations Joint Program on Girl Education to generate power for printing examinations and Internet services . With internet service available teachers are able to download information for teaching and learning activities.

DISTRICT EDUCATION MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYTEM SECTION (DEMIS)

This department is responsible for education data management . Through its designed data management system and tools, the department collects data from the schools in the district, analyse the data and give the evidence based feedbacks to schools on how the schools are performing.

SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION SECTION (SNE)

The department of Inclusive Education play a pivotal role in ensuring that all students including those with diverse abilities, background and needs have equal access to quality education.

The official opening of Ngolowindo Resource Centre for learners with all kinds of disabilities. It was constructed by Starfish Malawi and it was officially opened by the Chief Education Officer (CEO) Dr Anne Chizengo (PhD).

A team of assessors conducting screening of children with disabilities at Chenjerani school in Yambe zone. The screening exercise was organized and funded by World Vision. Among the assessors were: Specialists from Education sector, Salima DHO and MACOHA.

The team of assessors visited the home of Seleman Malizani(15 years) in Chigumukire area to appreciate how his mother is taking care of him. A small training was provided to her on how to use the wheel chair. The boy has multiple disabilities. He has cerebral palsy and Hydrocephaly.

SCHOOL HEALTH AND NUTRITION SECTION

Schools Health and Nutrition program focuses on improving health condition and learning processes among girls and children through provision of integrated health services and nutrition programs. This program is funded by the Malawi Government and Development Partners like World Food Program (WFP).
